Your first spray tan: essential tips for a perfect glow
The biggest thing to understand is that a great spray tan isn’t just about the appointment—it’s about how you prep and how you care for it after. When clients follow a few simple steps, the results look smoother, more natural, and last longer.
Before your visit
Focus on skin prep. Exfoliate about 24 hours in advance using a gentle, oil-free scrub. This removes dead skin and creates an even surface so the tan doesn’t cling to dry patches.
Hair removal matters
Shave or wax at least 24 hours beforehand to avoid irritation and to keep pores closed, which helps prevent uneven dots or discoloration.
What to wear
Come in loose, dark clothing and simple sandals if possible. Tight clothes can rub against the tan while it’s developing and cause uneven areas.
Preparing for your perfect tan
Beyond booking, knowing how to prepare and care for your spray tan is key to achieving a beautiful, long-lasting glow. Follow these tips for the best results.
Before your appointment: prep is everything
Exfoliate 24 hours before: Use a gentle, oil-free scrub or exfoliating mitt. This removes dead skin so the solution applies evenly and doesn’t cling to dry areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.
Complete any hair removal ahead of time: Shave or wax at least 24 hours prior. This helps avoid irritation and prevents dark dots from open pores.
Skip products the day of: No lotion, oils, deodorant, perfume, or makeup. These can create a barrier and affect how the tan develops.
Wear the right outfit: Loose, dark clothing and open-toe shoes are best. Tight fabrics can rub the tan while it’s developing and cause uneven spots.
Know your skin: If you have very dry areas, lightly moisturize them the night before (not the day of). And let your technician know your desired shade—they’ll customize it for you.
After your appointment: this makes or breaks your tan
Follow your development time exactly: Avoid water, sweating, or anything that can cause moisture until your tan has fully developed as advised by your technician. This is crucial for an even, streak-free result.
